Mathematics in the Primary Years

Marthese Morris, Head of Department Primary Maths

Mathematics is a fascinating subject with a long and remarkable history.  Mathematics is seen by many as the subject of counting, calculating and measuring; yet, it is much more than that. We teach Mathematics in schools because it provides opportunities to improve and nurture very essential skills such as problem solving, reasoning, creative thinking and communication. The Maths Support Team (MST) has been active and developing since 2011.  The team’s aim is to enrich mathematics in the primary years and improve its teaching and learning in all aspects of the subject.

At St Margaret College our focus is to understand and experience the reality of the teaching of mathematics within the schools that form part of the College. Furthermore, through a number of meetings held regularly throughout the year, both the leaders and MSTs are working towards valuing the strengths and acknowledging the needs for the benefit of each and every child.  During these meetings, school leaders are taking it in turns to share good practice. Besides, through brief sessions of professional development, the MSTs are introducing and boosting participants’ knowledge of new strategies. This is being done to facilitate and develop innovative ways to connect the subject to real life situations and thus making it a more authentic experience for the learners.
